History will fail to list the dead and the valiant as time goes on but the battles for the tumbleweed forts will live in the hearts of the desert knights 'til memories are no more.
When Joshua learns his family must once again move to a new home, he is not at all happy. Such is the lifestyle for families in which the father is a "knight of the sky" who flies the "thundering airships," but that makes it no easier for Joshua to bear. His desert home is his "mother," and he is distraught at the prospect of leaving, of having to face the fact that the "tumbleweed forts of his youth were being taken away by stepmothers of trees and forests of snow."
Joshua decides to have one last desert adventure, one last visit to the tumbleweed fort built with such care and precision by Joshua and his fellow "desert knights." Once he ventures out into the desert, however, the wind increases; he is caught in a sandstorm , and he struggles to reach his fort. Finally stumbling upon it, he gratefully crawls inside, his energy completely spent, and falls into a deep sleep. But when he awakes ... ah, then his most fantastical adventure begins.
Author Daniel Ferry has created a captivating story of a young boy's journey into another dimension. With scintillating descriptions and intriguing metaphors, Ferry paints a vivid picture of Joshua's adventure. The boy meets the ethereal Zaleen, a vision who guides him on his travels across many planes. He must evade the "Durs" ... guards whose punishment for "dimensional travel" is death to the traveler ... and battle dark knights, all the while keeping his wits about him as he learns the many lessons from the challenges Zaleen presents to him.
The satisfying and unexpected conclusion to this story is just another of Ferry's talents in weaving together the many threads of this mystical tale.

Tumbleweed Forts eBook Daniel Ferry

I'm not sure, but someone has been giving away secrets here. First I was swept away by the look into the world of kids' worlds of imagination that grownups lose upon entering adulthood. Seeing how serious they take their forts and their warriors reminds me of all the fantasy novels I devoured at their age. It was a wonderful reminder of what it is to be young. But then, there's the whole other world he is drawn into, where there are fairies and sprites and things that really go bump in the night. How do you cope with that? I'm an adult and I wouldn't want to deal with that let alone admit that this other world could really exist. I was swept away, holding my breath, waiting for what could possibly happen next. But the best was how he was so willing to accept what was going on even if he was stubborn, just like a true kid. The lessons he learned, the things he saw, no adult would ever understand but it all seemed so simple to him. It was well worth the trip.

Tumbleweed Forts eBook Daniel Ferry Reviews

I absolutely Loved this book! Mr. Ferry has a wonderful way of weaving words into fantastical visions for the reader to live through each page and follow the adventures that young Joshua must travel to find his way home and important life lessons as well.

I found myself smiling as I read passages of this book reminding myself of childhood memories spent on my own quests, making forts in the yard, playing in cornfields and racing down my own " Farmers Hill". If only one child can read this and realize that the adventures they make outdoors are so much more fun than what they play with their face in the video games, then we have have won a small victory!

Thank you Mr. Ferry for taking me back to my childhood and some of my fondest memories and making a truly wonderful, fantastical journey of read. May many more readers take the trip and leave wanting more, as I did.
I had mixed feelings about "Tumbleweed Forts". I loved how descriptive and imaginative Daniel Ferry was in creating the imagery of Joshua's adventure home and how life lessons were tied in to it. He was able to clearly paint pictures in my head and I could "see" his adventures and was captivated by his detail. It made me think back to my own childhood and how I spent EVERYDAY outside and a lot of the time was spent building forts and having all kinds of adventures with my friends. It is sad that most children do not experience this level of imagination or creativity alone but only with the help of video games or computers. I appreciate that the author has made me want to send my kid outside more and show her how limitless our imaginations are ) All that being said, I did find it hard to get into the book initially and put it down several times before I actually read it. I hope that other readers will give this book a chance and be able to relive some of their fond childhood memories like I did!!!
Joshua is a young, lonely, boy with a great imagination who builds tumbleweed forts in the desert. Along with his "clan of desert warriors", he goes on some exciting adventures as a" knight not distinguished by whatever body or gender they happen to be born with, but rather by the honor and bravery held by that vessel". Preparing to move away from his beloved mother desert, he decides to go to his fort one last time. A sand storm whips up making it hard for him to get there, but he struggles bravely against the wind and sand, following the voice of who he thought was his mother, finally arriving at his destination exhausted and falls asleep. He awakens to Zaleen, a beautiful "guardian" girl who takes him on an amazing journey through parts of his life, past and present, into different dimensions so he can see himself as he was and how he could be. They travel via a waterfall and imagination through "crevices of time falling to where fate could take him". He sees many different creatures and people along his adventurous journey with each stop being a lesson for him to use later in life.

I found this book to be cute and imaginative with some life lessons in it too. As Daniel Ferry states in the book, "Children have the strongest imagination, until it is mostly removed from them by rejection, ridicule, and doubt." Open up your imagination and you can find yourself "betwixt and between the not and the seen" Young readers as well as teens and adults (with imagination of course) should enjoy this book.
I have to say that this book was really hard for me to get into. I don't normally read fantasy/adventure books, but I decided to give this book a try. I would definitly recommend it for young adults.
I gave the book 3 stars, being I thought it was just okay... I didn't want to give it two stars. Imagination takes wind through this desert adventure book. I love fantasy stories but I just couldn't fully get into the story. It is a good short read maybe something to try while on vacation or flying. I did enjoy the Character Joshua with his ability to play and creative perspectives to nature. I have this on my and will give it another go.
Tumbleweed Forts

Tumbleweed Forts was an interesting story. At times it felt like a Native American legend and at others, a take off of Tolkien’s Hobbit books. I wasn’t always sure of the time frame, but the main character certainly had a vivid imagination.

I found the character of Joshua very engaging. His life is in upheaval and is not looking forward to moving and so retreats into his fantasy world.

The author wrote very richly and descriptively of the surroundings in this fantasy world. This book was written for an adolescent audience. I am not sure that some of the intended readers would be willing to wade through some of the language,
although enough action takes place to engage most young readers interested in the fantasy genre.

Overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to adolescent readers.
